Kobe Bryant Cheered Mets Home Run as a Kid…

Isn’t it cute watching kids see their sports heroes? Imagine a tiny tot daydreaming of slam dunks or three-pointers. But not all kids get to see icons like Kobe Bryant or LeBron James in action. For youngsters to witness these legends at a Lakers game is like winning the lottery, if the lottery also included a unicorn ride to outer space. It could spark their own dreams of stardom. Amazingly, a grainy 1990 video caught 12-year-old Kobe at a Phillies-Mets game, losing his mind as Darryl Strawberry hit a home run. And no, he wasn’t secretly practicing jump shots in left field!

Seeing mini Kobe go wild at a baseball game is incredibly rare. Today, we capture so many of these moments with phones glued to our hands. Yet, back in ’90, capturing stars as kids was as likely as having a T-Rex play shortstop. Even more special, Kobe later confessed his Mets fandom, drawing a connection to Strawberry. Fast forward, Kobe snapped up five NBA rings with the Lakers. Sasha Vujacic remembers fierce practice sessions with him, probably thinking Kobe was trying to knock the Earth off its orbit with pure grit.
