Lakers Unlikely to Extend Hachimura’s Contract…

Rui Hachimura’s journey with the Lakers seems as tricky as trying to dribble a basketball in a hurricane. Initially, the Washington Wizards had high hopes when they drafted him in the lottery. However, after not quite reaching those expectations, he took his traveling act—literally—to the Lakers in 2023. Lighting up the court with improved 3-point shooting, Hachimura became one of L.A.’s important players. Although contract extension talks started July 6th, it looks like he’s still waiting for an extension like it’s on a slow cargo ship from Japan.

Sources suggest the Lakers want to stay financially flexible, especially considering new ownership and stars like Luka Doncic in the mix. Despite enjoying significant team support, Hachimura finds himself fighting for his career like a sumo wrestler on skates. He knows he needs to level up his rebounding and defense this season to prove he can be a cornerstone alongside Doncic. With the Lakers contemplating clearing cap space next summer, it looks like Rui has to bring out the heavy artillery for the chance to remain a key player in L.A.
